Wondering Wednesday: Has Bella been able to make many friends?

I had planned to write this Wondering Wednesday question in advance and life seemed to have other plans. Today is my anniversary with my sweet, wonderful husband. We were unable to arrange a babysitter, so after language we are spending a nice evening together as a family and we hope to have a date night later this weekend. In light of that, I decided to answer an easy question for this week's WonderingWednesday question and let the pictures do most of the talking.

Has Bella been able to make many friends?

YES! I really haven't been anywhere that Bella hasn't been able to make lots of friends. She really loves other children! I recently asked our AiYi (house helper) if she was planning to take Bella outside to play or if they were staying in. She responded (in Chinese), "We will stay inside now. Today there are no little friends outside. Bella won't like it. She will be sad"

Our neighborhood is full of children! Our old neighborhood also had lots of kids, but it seems like Bella had a higher celebrity factor there. People often called her nicknames like foreign baby doll, active cute one, or little big sister. They were pushy about having their children play with the American. Our new neighborhood is a little more close knit. I notice that people call her more by her Chinese name or work hard to learn her English name. While there is still (and probably will be anywhere) a little bit of special treatment, relationships seem a little more real and normal.

Bella was invited to join the kindergarten class in a dance on stage for Children's Day. She was a little confused about what was going on.

Bella is in the stage where she really hasn't developed a strong sense of "mine" yet. She is happy to share her toys and snacks. The only things she gets territorial over are her binkys (which we are grateful she no longer wants to share) and the moped (she LOVES that thing). On the flip side, she really doesn't have a sense of "not mine." Which has occasionally created problems with kids who do not share her sense of communal property. She feels totally comfortable hopping a ride on someones bike or taking a bite of someone else's banana - with or without their permission. lol

If you have any questions about our life in China, leave me a comment or shoot me an email and I would love to answer it.

Our Sweet Bella is 18 Months!

Our sweet Bella is 18 months old today!

If I picture is worth a thousand words, this picture says it all about the life of our Bella Bella right now. 18 months going on 8 years!  Our Bella has been full of energy and personality since she was in my belly! It is such a joy to watch her grow.  I love seeing glimpses of the world through her eyes. I love how she can almost hyper-ventilate with excitement over things like bubbles or a passing airplane.

She is now weighing in at 20 lbs and something oz. (an accurate reading of ounces would require her to hold still much long than it seems possible). And every bit of her full of energy. She is fun fun fun.  She loves to run, dance, spin and climb. She is still our social butterfly. Bella loves being in the middle of it all and making new friends. She also has such a sweet heart. She loves to share her toys and snacks. She watches everything so closely and mimics everything she sees. We are  impressed all the time by what she notices, understands, and comprehends. Bella understands both English and Chinese now, although she only speaks a few words of each language. She is such a jabber mouth though and loves to have conversations in "Bella speak". One day I heard someone ask her, "Bella, thats not English or Chinese, who understands you?" She gave a sassy look and didn't hesitate to reply,"Dad-dy doesth"

The Makings of a Home Away From Home

Our family has been pretty nomadic over the past year. We are one of those families that can be at home almost anywhere as long as we are together. BUT I will say that after living in our new apartment for a month or two now - After a long day in a place that's foreign (no matter how much you love it), it is really nice to come home to a place that feels like us. How did we turn our Chinese apartment into our home?

There are several things you can usually expect from a Chinese apartment. Some interesting lighting (maybe disco or fun colors). It will not have an oven, clothes dryer, or central heat and ac. Usually it will not have closets or dressers (ours happens to have closets, which is great!), but usually they have a big wardrobe for clothes. You can also expect concrete walls. We were trying to hang a wall mirror recently. After going through two drill bits and several boxes of concrete nails, we realized that mirror was not going there. A chinese friend explained that was a special wall. We asked how we could tell which walls were special. He said we just needed to try to hang something. If it didn't work, it was a special wall.  Of course special or not at that point the wall is messed up.
Days spent unsucessfully hanging a mirror = frustrated husband = normal day in china

*Note to people in or thinking about being in China:  I definitely recommend bringing duct tape for some fix it jobs and locktite (strong blue sticky tact) for hanging. Since paint quality is often not very good, command hooks often don't do the trick. China sells great wall hooks that can support a lot of weight, but in my experience they tend to become part of the wall fixture itself. They will not come off with out taking a chunk of the wall with them.

On that note, no matter how great an apartment is it going to have its issues. It could be that your kitchen can't get hot water, the toilet can't flush paper, or the washing machine catches your bra on fire. Yes, even though our apartment is wonderful all of these things are true.

Chinese apartments typically come furnished. It makes perfect sense because many apartments, like ours, do not have elevators. Usually the rule is that if an apartment has 8 floors or higher the building must have an elevator.  With that in mind, can you imagine carrying all your furniture up as many as 7 flights of stairs? Like many people I think I'd decide to leave the furniture too.

We are really fortunate to have a great landlord and great furniture in our apartment. The only thing that we had to do was make the furniture work for us. So, that meant taking things apart and switching them all around between rooms.  We also had to put on our problem solving hats on to get things to meet our needs. For example, we had a honkin big desk/bookshelf combo that we wanted out of Bella's room and that wouldn't fit anywhere else. Getting rid of furniture is not usually an option since it belongs to the landlord. We decided to take the desk and bookshelf apart. Then we had to build legs for the desk portion (its not pretty, but its functional and withstood the earthquake) and do a little fix it work on bookshelf. Now the desk fits in the spare room, the bookshelf is a nice addition to our living room, and Bella has lots of space for playing. :)

Buying second hand items (like furniture, clothing, ect) is NOT part of chinese culture. It seems contradictory to a culture that rarely lets things go to waste, but perhaps it is because Chinese people usually don't get rid of things that are still useful. The idea of buying a new couch because you want a new couch or style, when the old couch is still functional would seem very strange to most here. So there just aren't as many quality used items to buy. It has caused some sticker shock on my part! Yes, when comparing buying new items in America vs. buying new items China - buying in China is almost always cheaper. But I am all about thrifty shopping, craigslist, and yardsales. I hardly ever bought new items for our home in the states, so I am used to second hand prices and having the option to buy nice gently used things cheap.

We have been really fortunate to come across several other foreigners moving from our city though.  Foreigners move in and out of cities a lot and are often willing to help each other by passing, along or selling cheap, the things that they no longer need. We have been really blessed by some great hand me downs. And we are looking forward to passing along many things when we move away. Below is a changing table that a foreigner imported to our city 17 years ago! In its 17 years in our city it has been passed along through many families and babies, and now it will be used by little Emma. Getting it back to our apartment was a whole other adventure.

How did we find decor? We live in a bigger city, so we have access to a lot of things others don't. Also, with the use of TaoBao (chinese ebay) shopping has become a lot easier for everyone in China. We also love going out to big markets and looking for neat things from street vendors. You can find some really neat stuff for cheap. I bought all three of these vases and a nice coffee mug from a woman selling pottery on a blanket on the side of the road. All together I paid about $8 for all 4 items. Score!

You can buy tons of things here, the trick is figuring out where to buy it.  A lot of times there isn't a one stop shop for buying everything you need. If you want to buy red and white flowers for your vase you may need to go to a particular store that sells white flowers in one part of town and then go to a different store in a different part of town for red flowers. Okay, so maybe its not quite that specific, but my point is that shopping takes time. A lot of time.  Which is why it has taken us awhile to get things set up and to take pictures. But we are settled now and so happy with our home. :)

Our aparrtment

Welcome to the Irwin Home!

We LOVE love love our new apartment! It has been a great fit for our family. We are now on the second floor of a single level apartment! We have really enjoyed the getting to make friendships with our neighbors and getting to know the neighborhood. We have worked hard to decorate and make it a place that is 'us'.

Bella's Room. (Soon to be The Girls' Room)

M&D's room has a disco ceiling light!

Emma has a special area close by Mommy and Daddy for now.
Later she'll move into big sis's room.

Wondering Wednesday: What's the food like?

We get asked so many questions about what daily life is like in China! Its hard to know where to even begin. So, I thought I'd take one day each week to answer a question about our life or shine some light on a cultural difference here. What are you wondering about this Wednesday? Leave a comment or send me a message or email and I will try to answer your questions.

This weeks Wondering Wednesday thought: Food.

There are so many questions about food! Lets try to knock out a couple. First, lets play myth busters. There are actually no fortune cookies in China. That idea was actually created in California and most Chinese people have never heard of such a thing. Second, the chinese food that you would typically find in America is much different than what you would find in China. There are no egg rolls, sugar-coated peanuts, or General Tso's Chicken.

My family loves chinese food. We eat local food about 95% of the time. We live in the Sichuan province where we are all about keeping it spicy! We love that the dishes all have so much flavor. I love vegetables. I have found that Chinese cuisine offers so many more types of veggies (green pumpkin, garlic stalks, and so much more) and ways to prepare them. While I'm not much of a meat eater, Philip and Bella certainly are. Most dishes in China are made with pork. Occasionally dishes are prepared with chicken, but even some dishes with chicken in the title are actually pork lol. Beef is really quite rare. Rice, of course, or noodles are served along with almost every meal - even breakfast. Fruit is usually eaten as a dessert or sweet treat, NOT a healthy side option haha.

Does Bella like the food? Oh my... yes! As some of you know, Bella's weight as always been somewhat of a concern for us. In the states, we were sent to specialists and hospitals for testing because of her low weight. Little did we know the answer was for us to move to China. She has always been a great eater, but she has gained over 5 lbs in the 4 months we have been here! She is now our 20lb turkey. She actually prefers Chinese food to American food. When we do cook western food, we usually have to cook Chinese food especially for her. She even likes the really spicy stuff. Recently we were eating dinner with a big group of friends. A joke got started that the test of who was the real man at the table would be who could handling eating this pepper. Then I realized that I had mistaken the pepper everyone was talking about for a green bean! I had given a spoonful to Bella and she had been snacking on them with no problems! hah! She even loves all the crazy flavored Chinese snacks. From hot and sour fish soup flavored cheetos to cucumber lays, she likes it all.

What foods do we miss the most? Bad question to ask a pregnant woman. :) There are two things that do not, or rarely, exist in Chinese cooking: dairy and sweets. Dairy is probably the hardest for me. I love all the southern comfort foods. But many chinese people have trouble digesting lactose. So milk, cheese and butter are not used to cook with very often, if at all. These ingredients can also be hard to find or expensive. And sweets. Oh how we miss our sweets! Chinese dessert tends to be either very bland or fruit. In fact, when we asked a Chinese friend how to best prepare desert for Chinese guests they said to take whatever our recipe said was the right amount of sugar and at least half it. We can find oreos, M&Ms, and chocolate bars. But other than that we don't have much of a selection for candy and desserts.

Bella and her Big Girl Bed

Bella has been able to climb her way out of the pack n play since she was about 12 months old. We have been on the fence for months now about when to move her over to a 'big girl bed'. I know there is a safety issue when they are able to climb over the sides of the crib. And I totally agree, which is why that little Turkey ended up in Mommy and Daddy's bed a lot since we weren't able to let her cry it out at all. However, 16 months seems so young! And I look at that tiny little girl and see my baby, not a growing toddler ready for a big bed!

With Emma's arrival getting closer and closer, I would have to put my denial aside and think pragmatically about this. All the parenting books say that any changes should happen several months before a new baby joins the family or wait until several months after. That makes sense. We needed to decide to buy another crib or go for it and pass along the crib to little sister.

We went for it!! Philip and I had this 'strategic parenting move' of letting her sleep on just the mattress for a few nights first. By 'strategic parenting move' I mean we totally just didn't have time to put the bed together for a few days, but it turned out to be a great transition period.

Only inches from the ground, Bella would roll off at night without waking up. We would find her completely asleep on the floor on the other side of the room. By night three, she sleep on her mattress all through the night without rolling off.

Time to put the bed together! Bella was a big helper assisting Daddy with the tools.

Whew, a hard working girl can really work up a sweat! After her first project, Bella started 'working' on all kinds of things. She likes to hammer!

Bella in her big girl bed! She does a great job staying in her bed and sleeping through the night.

Being a Mommy

You hear many women say that being a mom is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences in life. How true! Motherhood has been filled with moments that I have thought I can NOT possibly throw up one more time.  Moments when I've rocked my screaming baby through the night and thought that I cannot possibly stay awake one more moment. Moments where my arm has fallen asleep and feels like it might fall off, but I dare not move it and risk waking the baby. But there is no doubt that it is all worth it as that same baby wraps her tiny hand around my finger. My heart is filled with joy with kicks and jabs of sweet life growing in my belly. Words don't come close to describing the love I feel as I've heard those sweet baby giggles and later the big belly laughs that fill the room. Nothing can replace the feeling I have when only a mommy kiss can make that little boo boo feel better or watching those wobbly little legs brave their first steps.

Motherhood has been full of life lessons! Its been a continual lesson in patience. Filled with moments where I think I might go mad if I have to say 'sit on your bottom' one more time. Filled with moments when in the one second I had my back turned, she managed to make a huge mess. Filled with times our big helper makes a task take ten times longer than the time I want it to take. But it has been so fun to watch her learn to pick up her toys and figure out that the square block fits into the square hole. It makes me smile to see my shadow trying to copy the things I do. Its been so rewarding to watch her face express so much excitement and pride after completing something I've asked her to do.

I have found the most challenging thing about motherhood is the uncertainty.  So many times, it has been difficult to determine the best thing to do. Is she ready for solid foods?  When should we move her to a big girl bed?  Does this warrant a call to the doctor? Determining which battles are worth fighting and which ones are best left alone. When should let my mama bear instinct protect her and when is it better to let life's natural consequences teach her lessons?

Parenting has been a lesson in grace and forgiveness. As an imperfect person, I am a far from a perfect mommy. I hope that as my children grow older they can see my parenting for the love and good intentions it was filled with, rather than my mistakes. Parenting has been a constant change in perspective in many areas, including this.  I hope that as a daughter I am able to make mom feel appreciated for her heart of love instead of regret over things that could have gone better.

In so many ways, being a mom has increased my love, appreciation, and admiration for my mom.  I have been so blessed with a wonderful mom and mother-in-law. They have both made such an impact on my life. They have shaped who I want to be a person, friend, wife, and of course mother. I am so grateful for them! I am also grateful to their mothers who have been wonderful mothers and grandmothers! All these women have set such wonderful examples of parenting and love. Thank you!  I am also so thankful for a wonderful husband. I am so glad I get to share in the joys and frustrations of parenting with him! I am so overwhelmed by the joy and blessing it has been to be mommy! Happy Mothers Day!

A Day at the Zoo

Today was Bella's first trip to the zoo! The weather was perfect and it was so much fun to spend the day as a family! Our city has a great zoo! It only cost us about $3 per ticket and they had so many animals to see. I'm not sure if American animals are just lazy or if we just hit the zoo at the right time, but I've never seen the animals so active! So much fun to watch!

Bella really likes dinosaurs right now. Not sure if thats why, but she decided to growl at all the big animals. So silly, sweet girl!

Seeing the zebras reminded us of Marty from Madagascar. Mommy and Daddy singing the madagascar songs made Bella laugh.

Bella and this monkey were good friends. As strange as it sounds, the monkeys all seemed to pay special attention to us, especially Bella. We wondered if we looked different to them.

Bella loves animals! It was so much fun watching all her reactions. Bella started imitating the animals - not only the sounds, but also what they were doing. I haven't been to the zoo with very many little people, maybe its totally normal, but I found it fascinating. Below she is trying to chew like a goat and then playing with her hair like a monkey.

We also all got kisses from the seal! Bella got her kiss first. I think it startled her a little bit. Then it was Daddy's turn.

One of Bella's favorite parts of the zoo was feeding the animals. Bella loved feeding the camels!

And also the reindeer. I don't know, maybe she is hoping to score some points with Santa. ;)

Boxes of Love

To those of you who have been keeping up with the chaos that is our life over the past couple weeks, I'm pleased to share with you that things slowed way down this week. We had no major events and a pretty normal week. Of course, we did have a lot of catching up to do, but we were able to get a lot done. We made a lot of progress in settling in to the new apartment and even got a chance to do some decorating. (Again I promise pictures are coming soon). We got to spend some time with friends and connect a lot with new neighbors.

During all the happenings of the past month or so, we were so blessed to receive a couple boxes! When you have stressful things going on it truly is so wonderful to have some missed comfort items from home. Compared to so many places around the world, we really do have access to so many things!  But sometimes receiving box from home isn't just about the 'stuff'. Its the reminder that you are missed and loved by someone back 'home'. That someone went to the trouble of gathering sweet gifts and made the financial sacrifice to mail it all the way around the world (cause it is expensive and we know that).  Anyways, we feel so blessed and are so grateful for our packages!

Bella is opening a box of treats from Grandpa

We also got a special box from Nonnie! Bella opened it over skype (so fun)!
So, we don't have as many box opening pictures, but we did enjoy our goodies!

We are a sesame street loving family! Thanks Nonnie for our cute jammies.

Bella is giving her new pal Elmo lots of hugs.
